 Mount Ruapehu NZ

How often are you still?

How often are you still enough to see the beauty around you?

Sometimes it’s easy, especially if you’re in nature, or somewhere where beauty jumps out and slaps you in the face – maybe for you, it’s a gallery or a fashion show, or your child doing something that captures your heart.

The picture above was taken from a ski lodge at Whakapapa ski field on Mount Ruapehu, NZ. I was invited to trek to the crater lake on Mount Ruahehu, and since it had been something I’d wanted to do for a number of years I jumped at the chance.

Little did I know the huge personal challenge it was going to present. Physically demanding, with a horrifying moment in the decent where I really did think I was going to die – I’ve never been more petrified in all my life – truly!

But I made it, with the help of people I didn’t know well. They knew I was struggling and they reached out and helped me, but I had to suck it up and force myself through my fear…to keep moving…to make it.

I won’t be doing it again…and after the intense emotion of the ordeal, and the sore, weary body subsided, I can say I’m pleased I did it. Some awesome photos are part of the reward – like this beautiful, stunning, quiet sunset on top of the mountain. Stillness. Beauty. A moment in time to cherish and remember.

When was the last time you challenged yourself? I mean REALLY challenged yourself?

How did you feel afterwards?

What did you learn about yourself?

And when was the last time you were still enough to appreciate the beauty around you?
