Health Benefits of Avocado – And Why It’s The Most Underrated Super Food

I must admit I was once scared of eating avocados but it quickly became a large staple in my diet, and not just because it’s so tasty but because of it’s many health benefits.

Avocado is high in fat, which is bad right? Well, there is a whopping 15g of fats found in just a 100g serve. However 85% of its total fats are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats known as “good” fats.

These healthy fats have been associated with the prevention of heart disease, diabetes, stroke and bad cholesterol levels, which is the complete opposite to saturated fatty acids “bad” fats.

For years we’ve been told to avoid fats because it causes us to be fat, but what if we’ve been told wrong?

A growing amount of research has caused us to rethink this past thought and to now consider that healthy fats, like the ones found in avocados are actually good for us.

So what does this mean?

Well, while Avocados contains large amount of fat, it also contains 20 of our essential vitamins and minerals, which essentially makes it a super food.

To make things more clear, here is an overview on some of the most noteworthy benefits:

Helps You Consume Fewer Calories
As far as weight loss is concerned, avocado will be your new best friend. And this is due to their high content of fibre sitosterol, which is responsible for removing fat from your intestines.

Avocados are also full of electrical energy (which is what your body uses for vitality) and so it’s used as instant energy rather than being stored as fat.

Studies show that women who eat a diet high in “healthy” fats and lower in carbs/sugars experience greater weight loss then a diet low in fat.

It’s also been a personal experience that eating an avocado, reduces my appetite for the rest of the day and it keeps me full for longer, which results in me consuming fewer calories overall. And the fewer calories you consume the better for weight loss success.

Keeps You Living Longer
Monounsaturated Fatty Acids (MUFAs), the predominate fats in avocados, are responsible for many health benefits. The body uses MUFAs to improve blood cholesterol levels, ease inflammation, stabilize heart rhythms, and plays a role in the prevention of colon, breast and oral cancers.

Stops Weight Gain
When replacing saturated fats and carbs with “healthy” fats, it shows to provide a huge improvement in insulin sensitivity and glycaemic control-which is a major factor in weight gain and development of diabetes. Additionally, it’s one of the lowest sugar containing fruits, which makes it the better snack over fruit for optimal healthy and weight loss.

Contains 20 Essential Vitamins and Minerals
Avocados contain more potassium and less sugar then bananas, which is what bananas have been famous for. Additionally, avocados are rich in:

  • Vitamin K (which is essential for building strong bones and preventing heart disease)
  • Vitamin B, B6, and B5 (all B Vitamins are essential for energy production and building new red blood cells)
  • Vitamin C (which protects your against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling
  • Vitamin E (which is full of Antioxidants, which remove free radicals. This means it reduces your risk of getting cancer and it has great properties which heals your skin and protects you from the sun, leaving your skin looking healthy and young)

Great For Baking
As far as baking benefits are concerned, avocados have a creamy buttery taste and texture, which makes it a sensational vegan and health substitute in place of butter and oils. The substitution of avocado in baked goods help increase the nutritional value by the addition of extra vitamins and minerals. An avocado gives your baked goods a softer, chewier texture too and there’s a less chance of it being crumbly or falling apart.

Effective and Affordable Anti-aging Skin Care Solutions
Avocados have benefits beyond food and nutrition. It can be used as an amazing facial cream and moisturizer.

People with dry skin should consider avocados as a moisturizer because it helps make your skin more beautiful and hydrated (check out a great avocado skincare recipe below).

Avocados have also been used to treat some forms of dermatitis and arthritis
Not just this, but avocado oil (if you can get your hands on some) helps relieve eczema because of its rich levels of Vitamins A, D & E, all which helps maintain healthy skin. This is especially beneficial during cold months when your skin is more susceptible to dryness.

So should we be consuming more avocados?

Due to its high levels of healthy fats and rich content of essential vitamins and minerals, avocados are great substitute or foods high in saturated fats and trans fats.

But despite having such amazing health benefits, avocados are still a fat, and all fats are calorie-dense. So it’s best used to replace a diet high in saturated fats, carbs and sugars for optimal weight loss results.

For beauty purposes avocado oil should replace your standardize moisturizers as it’s completely natural and the most cost effective and efficient overall.

Bottom Line: If you’ve cut avocados from your diet because they’re high in fat, don’t. Rather consider reducing your consumption of butter, red meat and full fat dairy for more avocados.

Shopping tip: To purchase the best avocados look for peeks that are green and feel firm at the top. If the peek is brown, just put the avocado back because it means its over-ripe.
