Finding Gratitude

Heart in the sandGratitude.  It’s a word that will have some rolling their eyes and saying “Yeah right, what have I got to be grateful for?”  While others will smile, nod their head and know exactly what I’m talking about.  It completely boils down to your frame of mind.   Doesn’t everything?

So, what is this magic “G” word all about?

If you’re rolling your eyes and shaking your head and about to back off this page and onto something else – STOP!  Just take a moment to read further, hey, you might just change your mind…

Ok you sceptics;  I bet you are feeling down in the dumps, or at the very least feeling flat…life sucks, nothing’s going right, everything’s wrong.  You hate your job, have no money, having relationship or family problems…what’s there to be grateful for?

Yeah, I know, I’ve been there too.  Actually I’ve been there quite recently.  I had moved out of my heart and into my head.  My head that sees the pictures of my daily life that aren’t quite working how I’d thought they would.  My head that is busy thinking of how it “should” be and isn’t.  Sound familiar?

It’s a total head spin, a brain drain, a life sucker…get out of your head and into your heart.  STOP. Look around you and see the little things you can be thankful for…

Well, for starters I’m still breathing and alive, that’s got to be good, right?  At least if I’m breathing and alive, tomorrow is another day and it just might be better…and well, I’ve got two working arms and two working legs, I can see and I can hear…and actually, today it was sunny and warm, that’s certainly something to be grateful for after the bout of gloomy grey and rain we’ve been having.  Oh yeah, and one of my good friends called to see how I was and we met for coffee.  I’m so lucky to have good friends and family who care about me.  Oh, and I’m also grateful I had enough money to buy a coffee…and a car that gets me from A to B…and the time to be able to go and catch up with her.  And you know what?  Actually life’s not that bad after all.  Actually I’m grateful for a lot really.

This is an example.  I’m actually grateful for a whole list of things but I hope you get the picture…  They don’t have to be BIG things that you’re trying to feel grateful for but can’t.  It’s just little everyday things.

Here’s what you do.  At night, when you’re lying in bed in the dark, just before you go off to sleep…close your eyes and whisper quietly to yourself or in your mind, all the things you are grateful for that have happened that day or that are occurring in your life at the moment.  Even if you can only come up with one thing – it’s something!

The more you do it, the easier it becomes – like any habit.  After a while you will be amazed at all the good that is in your life.  And guess what?  You will attract more by being in this frame of mind.  What you focus on you attract.

“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more.  If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.”  Oprah Winfrey

You can also do this in a Gratitude Journal.  Buy a beautiful journal and write in it regularly.  When you’re having a bad day have a look through your Journal and it will trigger your good feelings.

So, here’s some things I am grateful for at the moment:

I’m healthy.  I’m loved.  I have enough money for food.  I have somewhere clean, warm and safe to live.  I have wonderful supportive friends and family.  I am able to see, hear and walk.  I am able to travel.  I have a wonderful partner who supports me to be all I can be.  I live in a beautiful country.  I am free to make choices.  I am grateful for my past hurts and hardships as they have shaped me into who I am today.  I am grateful for the amazing six months I had away last year in Bali

So, what are YOU grateful for…(please comment below)

    • Hi Serena, yeah, some days it’s easier than others but I like to go by the 80/20 rule – if you can be good 80% of the time, the other 20% when you aren’t so good is ok 🙂
