Dying for a Diet Drink?

Share with your friends...
Pirate SkullDo you use artifical sweeteners to avoid sugar?  Do you drink Diet Coke / Coca Cola Zero or similar to avoid sugar? Do you look at the ingredients list on the back of products to see what they actually contain?  One of the most common ‘sweeteners’ in products is Aspartame (code 950/951).  This toxic substance can be found in anything from diet drinks, to chewing gum, to Berocca….do you realise you’re doing more harm than good?

There have been several studies over the years that established a link between aspartame consumption and cancer risk. But, these studies were frequently criticized as being too small, only capturing a short period of time, and otherwise not living up to strict scientific standards. A new study, however, addresses these concerns and substantiates what the previous ones already said: that aspartame in diet soda can increase your risk of certain types of cancer, exponentially. It seems the aspartame-cancer link has been exposed…again.

The Aspartame-Cancer Link

Scientists looked at data from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study for a period of 22 years, including over 77,000 female study subjects and nearly 48,000 males. In all, the giant study looked at “2,278,396 person-years of data”, the most of all previous aspartame studies.

Study participants were asked about their diets every two years. In prior studies, questions about aspartame were only asked once, opening them up to error and criticism. What this study found, however, is frightening.

One can of diet soda each day can increase leukemia risk in men and women by 42 percent, increase multiple myeloma risk in men by 102 percent, and increase the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma by 31 percent in men.

The results are frightening, but not surprising. Though previous research was criticized for not being scientifically sound—the findings were similar. Another study focusing on the aspartame-cancer link found that of 48 rats experimented on, up to 67% of all female rats developed tumors roughly the size of golf balls or larger. The male population also suffered, with 21% of the males developing similar cancerous growths.

What’s possibly even more concerning is that aspartame is created using genetically modified bacteria. Revealing how aspartame is made, an article from The Independent reports that both a Monsanto source and a Monsanto spokesperson admits that aspartame creation process did in fact involve genetically modified bacteria.

“We have two strains of bacteria – one is traditionally modified and one is genetically modified,” said the source. “It’s got a modified enzyme. It has one amino acid different.”

Stay Away

Although there are other sources of aspartame, diet soda remains the most popular. If you were ever wondering, ‘is diet soda bad for you‘, the answer is a sound ‘yes’. In the United States, we consume an estimated 5,250 tons of aspartame each year, of which 86% is in the form of diet sodas.

Recognizing the dangers of diet soda, many people limit themselves to just one can each day. But this latest research shows that one can is enough to do significant damage. And, switching back to a sugared soda isn’t any better—researchers found men drinking one or more regular sodas saw a 66% increase in non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

What’s the solution? Quit drinking soda. If you’re in it for the caffeine, try green tea and it’s many benefits or even coffee. If you prefer cold and refreshing, have iced tea.

Changing your habits takes motivation and dedication (follow-thru). This research showing the aspartame-cancer link yet again should provide the motivation, but it’s up to you to take steps towards reclaiming your health.

The Aspartame Trap: You May Be Unknowingly Ingesting this Toxic Sweetener

The risk of artificial sweeteners is still very real. Aspartame is used as a substitute sweetener in thousands of products. Most diet sodas, processed foods and candies contain this ‘alternative’ to sugar. If you aren’t careful, you’ll easily run into it somewhere in your food.

Aspartame is marketed not by its real name, but through products like Equal and NutraSweet. This is because aspartame itself has a bad reputation as a dangerous excitotoxin. An excitotoxin is named for its ability to ‘excite’ the cells of the body into overproducing a particular chemical, thus burning them out prematurely. Aspartame in particular has been found to affect brain cells, by mimicking the response to sweetness and producing an artificial form of it.

One study actually found that 67% of female rats exposed to aspartame developed tumors roughly the size of golf balls or larger.

When you consume an aspartame-sweetened product, its effect can translate into a number of neurological symptoms like headaches, fatigue, vision problems, and anxiety. These will continue to manifest until the user eliminates it from their diet completely. However, if aspartame usage is continued, a physical addiction to the substance occurs. Most people know at least one person who can’t seem to kick their diet drinks, and when they try to, they end up with a number of these symptoms. Aspartame is considered addictive, and a chemical dependency begins to form when aspartame is consumed regularly, and is hard to break.

Aspartame Linked to Cancer, Contains Genetically Modified Bacteria

Due to the neurological effect aspartame has, its continued use can be expected to lead to many forms of neurological diseases as well as cancer. Aspartame has been suggested as a prominent cause for certain forms of brain cancer as well. It is also interesting to note that aspartame is also created using Monsanto’s genetically modified bacteria, raising further cause for alarm.

But who is most at risk for unknowingly consuming aspartame?

Older people and diabetics are more likely to consume aspartame due to their desire to replace sugar with a ‘healthy’ alternative. Of course aspartame is far from a healthy alternative. Its effects can easily accelerate or compound health concerns that these individuals may already have. Similarly, children are more likely to consume aspartame due to its prominent usage in all forms of candy, snacks, and soft drinks. This would easily serve to compromise their ability to achieve optimum health, as they are still in their formative stages, and therefore aspartame can cause irrevocable damage.

Avoid this addictive drug-like substance at any cost, and replace it with a real healthy alternative like stevia. Furthermore, it will benefit you to reconsider your stance on sugar consumption in general. Rather than look for what seems to be a shortcut or alternative, consider that simply consuming less sugar is healthier.

  1. just located a packet of stevia in the dreaded Woolies in Oz – so it’s freely available. I will use it instead of sugar in recipes from now on.
